Georgian Court Outmatched by Adelphi University ... Pounced by Visiting Panthers, 86-63

Keosha Parks
Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad could not keep up with the fast-paced play of visiting Adelphi University Wednesday evening as the Panthers coasted to a 86-63 non-conference triumph over the Lions in the GCU Wellness Center.

Adelphi, who recieved votes in the most recent USA TODAY Sports Division II Top-25 Coaches' Poll, stays perfect on the year with a 7-0 record. GCU, losers of four straight, fall to 1-7. The 86 points by the Panthers is the highest point total permitted by the Lions in 2013-14.

Both squads matched basket for basket for the first five minutes of the contest with the Lions owning a 13-12 lead at 15:03 after an Ashiri Broadwater layup. The wheels completely came off the GCU express very quickly, unfortunately, as a Tara Flynn (So.-Bayonne, N.J.) three-pointer at 13:40 commenced a 19-0 run that put Adelphi up 31-13 with 6:42 to go in the half. Calli Balfour's (Fr.-Hopewell Junction, N.Y.)  three-ball with 18 ticks remaining gave the visitors a stanza-high advantage of 48-24 going into intermission.

Georgian Court opened the second frame with a mini-spurt of 15-6 to cut the deficit to 54-39 4:16 into the half. The Panthers proceeded to fire up the afterburners from that point, breaking open a game-high 32-point lead (73-41) after a Jessica Kitrys (Sr.-Parlin, N.J.) free throw with 10:22 to go. GCU was able to climb within 23 points twice under the 2:00-mark, but the outcome was solidified well before the final horn.

33 GCU turnovers morphed into 36 benefic points for Adelphi compared to 20 Georgian Court points off 24 miscues by the Panthers. Adelphi collected 11 more steals (20-9) than the home team while the Lions grabbed three more rebounds (37-34). GCU went 0-for-8 from beyond the arc while AU sank nine of 25 three-point attempts.

Kitrys tallied game-highs with her 24 points and eight rebounds, including a stellar 10-for-15 shooting effort from the floor. Sade Jackson (Sr.-Hackensack, N.J.) earned the game's lone double-double with her 11 points and contest-best 11 assists, while also snagging six steals. Kelly Mannix (Jr.-Barrington, R.I.) drained 16 points and corralled seven boards. Flynn matched Jackson with 11 points of her own.

GCU's Broadwater scored 20 points for the second time this season in her 36 minutes of action to go along with seven rebounds. Tahira Matthews sank 12 points while also collecting seven boards. Keosha Parks popped in 10 points for the Lions and led the roster with nine assists and five steals.

The Lions return to the floor Saturday afternoon when they host CACC-foe Caldwell College at 3:00 p.m.
