Georgian Court Hangs Tough In 54-45 Defeat vs. Goldey-Beacom

Liz Lawler collected three blocked shots Wednesday night vs. Goldey-Beacom.
LAKEWOOD, N.J.- As the fans in attendance turned back the clock celebrating 80's night, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad turned up the heat on Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday evening, eventually falling to the Lightning, 54-45, in the GCU Wellness Center Arena.

The defeat dropped the Lions to 7-15 on the year (6-10 CACC) while Goldey-Beacom improved to 16-8 with an impressive 13-2 conference mark.

Neither team held more than a three-point advantage at any point during the first 10:16 of action as the scoreboard reflected six lead changes and two stalemates over that period of time. Owning a 15-13 lead  with 9:44 remaining in the opening stanza, a Jacinda Jones (Sr.-Claymont, Del.) layup jumpstarted a 9-2 Lightning run over the next 4:34.

Georgian Court answered with its own 11-4 spurt , concluded by Jasmine Cobbs with her jumper with 0:15 remaining until intermission.  Cobbs topped the Lions with seven first-half points while Goldey-Beacom's Irene Hudson (Sr.-Syracuse, N.Y.) countered with eight points of her own.

Entering the second half up 28-26, GBC increased its advantage to six points before Cobbs' free throw 3:23 in gave the Lions their first point of the frame. Shauneia McPhearson's steal and layup cut the visitors' lead to a slim 38-36 advantage (12:16) before the Lightning blazed to a nine-point lead after a 7-0 run over the next 3:57.

GCU got as close as 48-44 with 2:54 left on the clock, but the  Lightning ended the contest outscoring the home team, 6-1, over the final 2:28.

Hudson led all players with her nine rebounds and 14 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor. Briana Richmond-Peters (Jr.-Camden, N.J.) popped in 11 points, followed by 10 from Chelsea Grover (So.-Southampton, N.J.).

For the 14th time this season, McPhearson led the Lions in scoring as she put in 14 points in 25 minutes and also denied three Lightning shots. Cobbs ended the game with eight points in 17 minutes. Tahira Matthews grabbed a team-high eight boards and Elizabeth Lawler also rejected three Goldey-Beacom shots.

The shooting efforts were anything but gnarly as the Lightning managed a 34.6% effort (18-for-52) while the Lions managed a 25.0% mark (16-for-64).

The Lions take to the road Saturday afternoon with another CACC contest, this time at Concordia College. Tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
