Georgian Court Women Fall Short at Wilmington University, 65-62

Brittany Baker
Newark, Del.-The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad stormed back from a 15-point deficit at intermission with a 40-28 advantage in the second half, but fell just short with its comeback, falling to host-Wilmington University, 65-62, Tuesday evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.

The Lions, winless on the road in 2013-14, dip to 3-11 on the year (2-6 CACC) while the Wildcats improve to 5-10 overall and match GCU with a 2-6 record vs. conference foes.

After Georgian Court tallied the initial points of the contest, Wilmington proceeded to dominate the remainder of the period, mounting a stanza-high, 18-point advantage with 5:27 to go after a lay-up and subsequent free throw from Tashea Plummer (Jr.-Landover Hills, Md.) made the score 32-14 Wildcats.

With Wilmington owning a 37-22 lead at intermission, Georgian Court kicked off the second frame with a 10-0 run, clipping the Wildcats' lead to 37-32 with 15:18 left. The home team would bounce back with a 9-1 dash of its own to increase their lead to 46-33 with 11:39 on the clock.

Down 64-56 with 2:06 to go, GCU mounted an 11th hour, 6-0 flurry and cut the deficit to a single basket with seconds remaining. However, a Tenicia Spence (So.-Baltimore, Md.) free throw before the final buzzer secured the win for the Wildcats.

Spence topped all players with a 35-point performance in 40 minutes, shooting 13-for-29 from the floor, while also sinking four three-pointers. Teammate Tiaja Harrold (So.Paulsboro, N.J.) dazzled with her contribution of 10 points and a team-best eight steals and four assists. Plummer and Jennifer Carr (Jr.-Federalsburg, Md.) controlled the glass for the Wildcats with 11 and 10 boards, respectively.

Brittany Baker paced the Georgian Court offense with her first double-double of the year, a 16-point, 16-rebound effort. Tahira Matthews followed with 14 points and eight boards. Elizabeth Lawler was a force on the defensive end with 12 rebounds, three steals, and eight mighty blocks.

The Lions travel to NYIT on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference contest. The game was originally scheduled for December 10th, but got postponed due to inclement weather.
