Wilmington, Del.-The Georgian Court University women's basketball team remains winless on the road (0-9) in 2013-14 as the Lions suffered a 63-50 setback at Goldey-Beacom College Tuesday evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) South Division competition.
The Lightning inch closer to the .500 mark with the victory, improving to 9-10 (6-6 CACC) on the season while GCU drops its seventh straight decision, falling to 3-16 (2-9 CACC) overall.
Things appeared to be on the up-and-up for the Lions at the initial outset of the contest as GCU jumped out to an 8-1 lead after a
Tahira Matthews layup 5:08 into the game. A Matthews jumper maintained Georgian Court's seven-point advantage 5:46 in to make the score 10-3.
Brittany Baker's jump shot with 13:52 to go provided GCU its final lead of seven points at 12-5 before the tides would begin to turn for the visitors.
A pair of
Chelsea Grover free throws at the 10:34 mark completed a 7-0 Lightning strike to even the score at 12-all. An
Inayah Williams lay-in at 9:55, followed by a foul shot by
Jade Williams at 9:04, allowed the Lions a 15-12 lead. GBC answered with a 17-2 run to secure a stanza-high,12-point advantage (29-17) with 0:46 remaining before intermission.
Goldey-Beacom led from start to finish in the second frame, but the Lions would not go down without a fight. With the Lightning leading 36-24 at the 15:11 mark, GCU rattled off a 10-0 spurt to move within a bucket at 36-34 with 11:30 to go. That would be as close as GCU would get the remainder of the evening as GBC responded with an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach at 47-34 with 6:06 left.
Shantia Creech led all scorers with 15 points off the Lightning bench.
Briana Richmond-Peters authored a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Lillian Chuwueze provided 13 points and six boards.
After missing the two previous contests, Matthews returned to the Georgian Court lineup to score a team-best 14 points and eight rebounds.
Ashiri Broadwater also reached double-digits in the scoring column with 11 points in 20 minutes off the bench.
The Lions take to the road again for a CACC match-up at Nyack College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
