GCU Women Sink Concordia College, 85-58, in First Contest of 2014

Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad returned from a two-week holiday hiatus rejuvenated and focused as the Lions kicked off 2014 with an 85-58 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) triumph over visiting Concordia College Saturday afternoon in the Wellness Center Arena.

With the victory, GCU improves to 3-9 (2-4 CACC) while the Clippers remain winless on the campaign, sinking to 0-13 (0-6 CACC).

A lay-up from Jessica Rosalbo (Fr.-Staten Island, N.Y.) at 18:30 remaining in the first half provided the Clippers an early 4-2 advantage. Brittany Baker tied the affair at 4-4 after two free throws at 17:54 before the senior guard put the Lions up 6-4 with a jumper at 17:47, a lead the home team would not again relinquish.

Victoria Rubin's (Fr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) jumper with 10:58 on the clock brought Concordia within one at 13-12. Georgian Court would proceed to fire off a 28-11 run that provided the Lions a 41-23 lead and stanza-high 18-point advantage with 1:18 to go before intermission.

The Clippers sank three foul shots in the remaining seconds to enter halftime with a 41-26 deficit.

It was all GCU in the second frame as the Lions increased their lead to a game-best 31 points after a pair of Octivia Booker free throws put Georgian Court ahead, 80-49, with 5:39 left in regulation. The Clippers would cut Georgian Court's advantage to 27 points on two seperate occasions over the remaining time, but the final result had been long since decided.

Ashiri Broadwater drained a game-high 23 points, to go along with eight rebounds, as the Chicago native collected her fourth contest of the season with 20 or more points. Baker collected a season-high 19 points and tied teammate Keosha Parks with a contest-best four steals. She also tallied three assists and two blocks.Parks paced all players with eight assists, which complemented her 10 points on the day. Tahira Matthews also dropped in 10 points of her own.

Megan Burns (Jr.-Staten Island, N.Y.) headlined the Concordia offense with her 19 points, which included a stellar 13-for-14 effort from the charity stripe. Rosalbo contributed 11 points and three assists before fouling out of the contest with 10:05 remaining.

Fouls played a major factor in the outcome of the contest as GCU collected 33 points on free throws (37 FTA). The Clippers shot 19-of-28 from the charity stripe (67.9%). The Lions also controlled the boards, out-rebounding their foe by a 43-28 count.

Georgian Court looks to keep the momentum going when they next take the court on Saturday, January 11 with a 1:00 p.m. home game vs. Chestnut Hill College.
