Lions Sink Queens College, 61-45 in GCU Home Opener ... Above .500 For First Time in Program History

Keith Hughes
Lakewood, NJ- The Georgian Court University men's basketball team, coming off a historic road win Saturday, followed up that performance with a commanding 61-45 win over the visiting Knights of Queens College in the Lions' home opener Monday night.

The win moves GCU to 2-1 on the young season and over .500 for the first time in the program's history. The loss drops the Knights to 0-3.

The Lions held the Knights to just 17 first-half points en route to a 28-17 halftime lead. In the second stanza, Queens was able to cut the lead to four, but Chris Polanco (Fr. New York, NY) scored six unanswered, (including a four-point play after a being fouled on a sensational three-point make) to increase the GCU lead back to double-digits. The Lions' strong play down the stretch allowed them to seal the victory.

Keith Hughes (So. Woodbridge, NJ) paced the Lions with 21 points and seven boards while Jordan Wejnert (Sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ) chipped in with 14 for the home team. As for Queens College, Jeremiah Mordi (Sr. Valley Stream, NY) scored a team high 19 points. However, it was the GCU defense that showed up big on this night as the squad held the Knights to a season low 25% from the field and forced 14 turnovers.

The Lions look to continue their winning ways as they host Philadelphia University in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference kick-off on Thursday night, following the women's home opener, also vs. the Rams, at 6pm in the Wellness Center.
