Mercy College Slips Past GCU Men, 90-84, in High-Scoring Affair

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.- After two consecutive home games, the Georgian Court University men's basketball squad returned to the road Saturday afternoon with a non-conference contest vs. Mercy College.

The Mavericks (2-0), after providing the Lions with their first win in program history on November 20, 2013, got payback vs. GCU with a 90-86 triumph in the Mercy Gymnasium.

Aside from four stalemates, Mercy led the entire first half with the high-water mark reaching 15 points with a 30-15 advantage at 10:03 remaining in the stanza. After growing their lead to a game-high 18 with 6:25 left in regulation,the Mavs appeared to be on their way to an easy victory. The Lions had other thoughts, however, as the visitors rattled of an incredible 22-6 run to cut the deficit to just a field goal (85-83) with 00:40 on the clock. 

Mercy righted its ship by closing the contest with a 5-1 spurt to clinch the win.

Juwuan Carter (Fr.-Patterson, N.J.) paced the GCU offense with a season-high 24 points, including a 10-for-16 showing from the floor. Chris Polanco (Fr.-New York, N.Y.) provided 19 points and team-high three steals while Michael Pierre (Fr.-Melrose, N.Y.) drained 17 points and dished four assists.

Tyseem Lyles led the victors with a game-high 27 points shooting 10-of-13 from the floor, including a 3-for-5 performance from three-point land.

GCU returns to the Wellness Center Tuesday evening for a CACC contest vs. Holy Family University at 8:00 p.m.
