Philadelphia, Pa.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad, seeking its first victory away from home since February 16, 2013, suffered a 75-61 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setback Tuesday evening to host-Chestnut Hill College.
GCU is now 3-21 on the season (2-14 CACC) while falling to 0-11 away from the Wellness Center. The Griffins, with the season-sweep of the Lions, improve to 8-16 overall with a 6-11 conference mark.
Georgian Court jumped out to an immediate 6-0 lead after an
Ashiri Broadwater jumper 4:07 into the contest. Chestnut Hill answered with a 10-2 run to take a two-point advantage 5:56 in, highlighted by a
Shayla Felder (Jr.-Cheltenham, Pa.) three-pointer. The Griffins would increase their lead to a stanza-high seven points at 22-15 on a Felder jumper with 7:53 to go.
The Lions rattled off a nifty 8-0 spurt to take a slim 23-22 lead, capped by a Broadwater jumper with 4:24 left on the clock. The two squads would experience three more stalemates and no lead larger than two points before Chestnut Hill netted the final four points of the half, including a
Olivia Gorczynski (Jr.-Parlin, N.J.) three-ball with eight ticks remaining before intermission.
The Griffins controlled the second frame leading the entire 20 minutes. An
Elizabeth Lawler free throw brought the Lions to within five at 56-51 with 6:19 to go, but that would be as close as the visitors would get. Chestnut Hill would lead by 10 or more points for the final 3:08, reaching a high-water mark of 75-59 with 0:09 remaining.
Gorczynski topped the victors with 20 points, nine boards, four assists, and three steals in 36 minutes. Felder added 17 points and four assists of her own.
Brittany McDonough (So.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Tenisha Townsend-Mobley (Jr.-Pleasantville, N.J.) each scored 11 points and snared five rebounds in the effort.
Tahira Matthews registered a monster showing for the Lions, draining a season-high 29 points and 16 rebounds, to go along with a team-best five steals. Lawler collected nine points and three blocks while
Brittany Baker popped in eight points and controlled eight boards.
GCU returns home this Saturday with a CACC match-up vs. Post Univertsity at 1:00 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
