Georgian Court Women Stop Skid with Spicy 79-67 Win Over Post University

Brittany Baker Bids for Quadruple-Double

Tahira Matthews
Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad snapped a season-high 12-game losing streak Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action as the Lions toppled visiting-Post University, 79-67, in the GCU Wellness Center.

Brittany Baker came within two steals and four assists of the elusive quadruple-double as the Waldorf, Md. senior settle for her second double-double of the season with 14 boards and 14 points.

The two clubs experienced six ties and eight lead changes in a closely-contested first half. A pair of Ashiri Broadwater free throws at 14:34 capped a 9-0 GCU run and provided the Lions a stanza-best, seven-point advantage at 17-10. The Eagles immediately answered with a nifty 9-0 run of its own as a Jessica Ayala (Fr.-Middletown, N.Y.) jumper provided Post with a 19-17 lead at 12:38.

The lead would not rise higher than three points for either squad until a layup and subsequent free throw by Aubrey Lathem (Sr.-Mystic, Conn.) gave the visitors a 36-32 lead with 2:31 remaining. The surplus would eventually grow to seven after a free throw by Hailey Griffin (So.-Plainfield, Conn.) with 0:44 on the clock.

After entering the intermission up by a score of 40-34, Post University (9-16, 9-10 CACC) increased its lead to eight points on two separate occasions with the latter coming on a Latham layup 1:37 into the second stanza to make the score 46-38. The Lions erased the deficit with 7:35 left as two foul shots by Tahira Matthews knotted the affair at 57-57. Liz Lawler's lay-in at 6:44 concluded another 9-0 run for GCU and gave the home team a 62-57 cushion.

Post's Raven Wright-James (Sr.-Middletown, Conn.) popped in a three-ball with 5:20 on the clock to inch the Eagles to within a bucket at 62-60. However, Octivia Booker countered with a three of her own to make the score 65-60 with 3:48 remaining. The score would not be that close again as Georgian Court (4-21, 3-14 CACC) coasted to its first victory since January 4th vs. Concordia College.

After draining 29 points and snaring 16 boards at Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, Tahira Matthews responded with her second consecutive double-double (sixth overall) with a team-best 21 points and 14 rebounds. Lawler established a personal-high with her 16 points, to go along with a game-best three blocks. Keosha Parks deposited 10 points in the effort. Baker's eight steals and six assists were game-highs.

Latham topped the Eagles with a game-high 29 points, to go along with five boards and four steals. Ayala contributed 12 points while Wright-James grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and drained eight points.

The 2013-14 campaign comes to a close Tuesday evening for GCU as the Lions welcome University of the Sciences to the Wellness Center at 6:00 p.m. Georgian Court will honor its seniors ... Baker, Lawler, and Inayah Williams in a special pre-game ceremony that will commence at 5:50 p.m.
