Georgian Court Opens 2014 Lacrosse Campaign With 17-4 Setback vs. St. Thomas Aquinas

Molly McCourt
Brick, N.J.-The Georgian Court University lacrosse squad kicked off the 2014 campaign Wednesday afternoon with the Lions dropping a non-conference contest to visiting St.Thomas Aquinas College of the East Coast Conference. The game took place at Veterans Memorial Middle School due to poor field conditions on the GCU campus.

STAC senior Margaret Sharp (Suffern, N.Y.) put on an opening day clinic as she fired in five goals and assisted on five others for a ten-point afternoon. Juniors Genevieve Stickney (Bayport, N.Y.) and Kellie Kucinski (Roxbury, N.J.) each netted four goals apiece while Kelly Moresi (Sr.-Suffern, N.Y.) provided a pair of her own.

Senior Molly McCourt paced the Georgian Court offense with her first two goals of the season while senior Stephanie Gallo and junior Kerry Stader rounded out the GCU scoring with one goal each.

The Spartans outshot the Lions by a 31-21 margin and owned a 14-10 groundball advantage.

Kaitlyn Lonergan (So.-Stony Brook, N.Y) earned the season-opening victory in between the pipes for STAC, collecting 12 saves in 60 minutes of action. GCU's Amanda Cathcart was tagged with the loss as the junior netminder permitted 16 goals (three saves) in 50:15.

The Lions return to action next Wednesday, March 5, when they host Kutztown University at 3:30 p.m.
