Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University men's soccer squad, seeking its first taste of victory in 2014, was unable to hold a 1-0 Saturday afternoon as American International College battled back and escaped rainy Investors Savings Bank Field with a 2-1, non-conference win over the Lions.
GCU, with the setback, goes to 0-2-2 on the season while the visiting Yellowjackets return home with a record of 3-1.
Things got off to a great start for the Lions as senior
Ben Vergara (Toms River, N.J.) popped in a low-liner from the right side, courtesy of a
Garrett McVeigh (So.-Cherry Hill, N.J.) pass, to give the home team an initial 1-0 advantage at 16:17.
AIC erased the deficit at 57:02 as the Yellowjackets took advantage of a Georgian Court hand ball and tied the affair at 1-1 after a resulting
Ed Sharman (Jr.-Tunbridge Wells, UK) penalty kick.
The score would remain knotted until the final minutes of regulation when AIC's
Greg Smedberg (Sr.-Southington, Conn.) secured the comeback win for the 'Jackets, blasting home a rebounded save off GCU keeper
Rylan Gentil (Sr.-Poseyville, Ind.) with 4:27 (85:33) left on the clock.
GCU owned a 14-10 shot advantage in the contest while AIC collected three more corner kicks (6-3) than the Lions.
Sebastian Tamayo (So.-Stratford, Conn.) earned the road victory in the AIC net, collecting three saves in the effort. Gentil gathered six saves in the tough-luck defeat for the Lions.
Georgian Court next takes to the road this Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m., non-conference showdown at Dowling College.
