GCU Unable to Snare Second Straight ... Suffers 79-69 CACC Setback at Chestnut Hill

Jess Placher
Philadelphia, Pa.- Taking the floor for the first time since earning its first victory of 2014-15 last week vs. Concordia College, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad had its momentum halted Saturday afternoon with a 79-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setback at Chestnut Hill College.

With the loss, the Lions are now 1-12 on the campaign (1-7 CACC) while the Griffins improve to 4-10 (2-5 CACC).

Down by a score of 14-8 with 12:55 left in the first half, Georgian Court compiled a 10-3 run to secure its first lead of the contest (18-17) with 10:29 to go before intermission. The lead would be the lone advantage of the stanza for the Lions as Chestnut Hill regained the surplus at the 9:05 mark, courtesy of an Olivia Gorczynski (Sr.-Parlin, N.J.) three-pointer.

Another Gorczynski three-ball with 4:13 left provided the Griffins its largest lead of the period at 31-22. A Jess Placher (Fr.- Cape Coral, Fla.) three-pointer cut the lead to 33-31 with 2:02 on the clock, which would match the deficit at the end of the half after a pair of free throws by GCU's Justine Doran (Fr.-Milford, N.J.)  made the score 35-33 Chestnut Hill at the horn.

Tahira Matthews (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.) drained a free throw 1:47 into the second stanza, giving GCU its final advantage of the afternoon at 38-37. The Griffins mounted a 14-6 stretch to take a nine-point lead at the 14:46 mark before increasing the surplus to 16 (68-52) with 5:25 remaining, the ne plus ultra of the afternoon.

Gorczynski topped the victors with 19 points in 36 minutes, which included 4-of-9 from beyond the three-point arc.Tiffany Turner (Sr.-Marlton, N.J.) contributed a double-double consisting of 17 points and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes of play.

GCU's Morgan Peacock (So.-Edison, N.J.) drained a season-best 19 points, shooting 9-of-16 from the floor, and snagged a team-best seven boards in 34 minutes. Matthews followed with 14 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes of action. Placher dropped in a career-high four three-pointers (4-for-6) en route to 12 points on the day while Jameka Parsons (Sr.-Hillside, N.J.) added 10 of her own in 30 minutes.

The Lions return home Tuesday evening for a CACC rematch vs. Wilmington University at 6:00 p.m. The Wildcats drubbed Georgian Court, 70-44, back on December 17 in Wilmington.
