Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball team returned to action Tuesday night against the Wildcats of Wilmington University looking for their second win of the 2014-15 campaign. It was not to be as the Wildcats prevailed in a tightly contested game, 82-77, in the GCU Wellness Center.
Wilmington jumped out to an early 11-point lead and was seemingly in control midway through the first half of play, but the Lions were able to show some resiliency and battled back, taking a 39-37 lead into the locker room behind a sizzling 51.4% from the field. The second half see-sawed as both teams were finding success on the offensive end of the court. In the end, the Wildcats finished with five players reaching double figures in scoring led, byÂ
Tenisha Spence's (Jr. Baltimore, Md)Â 20 points, which pushed Wilmington to the victory.
The Lions were led in scoring by
Tahira Mathews (Sr. Bloomfield, NJ) who had her team-leading sixth double- double with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Jess Placher (Fr. Cape Coral, FL) chipped in with 17 points on 5-10 from long range off the bench to help keep the game close.
With the victory, Wilmington improves their record to 4-12 (2-7 CACC) while Georgian Court falls to 1-13 (1-8 CACC). The Lions will next take the court this Saturday as they travel to Albany, NY for a non- conference tilt against the College of St. Rose with tipoff scheduled for 1:30pm.
