Women's Hoops Pops Cork to Savor Sweet Taste of Victory With 54-52 Clipping of Concordia College

Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad kicked off the 2015 calendar in sensational fashion as the Lions erased a season-opening, 11-game losing streak Saturday afternoon by defeating visiting Concordia College, 54-52, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.

The victory improved GCU's record to 1-11 overall (1-6 CACC) and marked the Lions' first triumph since a 79-67 win over Post University on February 22, 2014. The Clippers dip to 2-8 (2-3 CACC) after the setback.

Trailing 5-4 at the 16:19 mark of the first half, Georgian Court mounted an 11-0 spurt to take a commanding 15-5 advantage with 9:38 remaining before intermission. A Jessica Rosalbo (So.-Staten Island, N.Y.) lay-up with 3:23 to go concluded a 14-4 run by Concordia, erasing the GCU advantage and tying the affair at 19-19.

Anna Ozolina (Jr.-Riga, Latvia) snapped the stalemate with a jumper at 2:43 to provide the Lions the lead for the remainder of the period. The home team would enter the locker room with a 26-23 edge.

In a tightly contested second session, both clubs would share five seperate tie scores in the period. Georgian Court's Morgan Peacock (So.-Edison, N.J.) proceeded to put a peremptory spin on the Lions' offense as she snapped a 49-49 knotting after a successful jumper with just 1:39 left in regulation.GCU would not relinquish the surplus, matching the Clippers, 3-3, over the remaining 99 ticks of the clock.

Tahira Matthews (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.) secured her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds and a game-high 18 points. Peacock contributed eight points and eight boards in 28 minutes of action.

Concordia's Hadiyah Black (Fr.-Brooklyn. N.Y.) sported a double-double of her own with 11 points and 11 boards while teammate Mariah Berry (Sr.-Southington, Conn.) added 10 points of her own.

The Lions take the week to savor the victory before returning to the court next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. CACC showdown at Chestnut Hill College.
