GCU Women Knock Off Nyack, 69-66, in National Girls and Women in Sports Day Thriller

Lakewood, N.J.- Georgian Court University hosted its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration Saturday afternoon with a day chock-full of activities and events throughout the GCU Wellness Center, recognizing the importance of fair play and equality in sports.

The main event, however, was the women's basketball match-up against Nyack College. To the delight of the raucous home crowd, the Lions treated their fans to a big 69-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the visiting Warriors.

The win was the first for GCU since January 3rd and marked the second conference triumph for the Lions.One game after tallying 20 points and 20 boards (1/24 vs. Dominican), Tahira Matthews (Bloomfield, NJ) once again dominated play with a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds. Matthews led a trio of Lions into double figures as the ever- improving freshman Jess Placher (Cape Coral, FL) added 14 points and sophomore Morgan Peacock (Edison, NJ) added 11 points and six boards.

For the Warriors, Jessica Logeman (Seminole, FL) paced the squad with 16 points. Raven Makins (Laurel, MD) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Nyack fell to 2-17 (2-11 CACC) with the loss.

Georgian Court (2-16, 2-10 CACC) has a busy week ahead as they will play Monday February 2nd in a home makeup game against Goldey- Beacom College with tip off scheduled for 6pm. The team will then hit the road for a non-conference showdown at Pace University before finishing the week Saturday at Felician College.
