Second-Half Surge Pushes Georgian Court Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 67-58

JD Rodriguez
Lakewood, NJ- It was a tale of two halves in Monday evening's men's basketball matchup between Georgian Court University and the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas, a game in which the home-Lions stormed back to swipe a dramatic 67-58 non-conference victory.

The Spartans raced out to a 41-26 halftime lead and looked to be in control of the game. However, the young Lions came roaring back in the second half, outscoring their opponent 41-17 on their way to a program-record third win of the season.

St. Thomas shot a blistering 60% from the field in the first half and were led by Alushula Odongo's (Suffern, NY) 13 points and Justin Reyes (Haverhill, MA) who chipped in with 11. The Lions struggled through the first 20 minutes from the field only converting 23% of their shots.

The second half was a different story as the Lions as clamped down defensively on the Spartans who were only able to muster six made baskets in the game's final 20 minutes. That defensive intensity translated on the offensive end of the court as GCU started dropping buckets in front of rowdy and excited home crowd. The Lions were led by Keith Hughes (Woodbridge, NJ) who had his best game of the year scoring 22 points and collecting 15 rebounds. JD Rodriguez (Perth Amboy, NJ) came off the bench to provide a spark with 14 points and 4 assists. Georgian Court finished the game on a 35-8 run to seal the deal.

With the win the Lions improve their record to 3-11 while STAC drops to 6-7. Georgian Court will look to keep the momentum going this Saturday as they travel to Chestnut Hill College for a CACC matchup with the Griffins.
