GCU Women Show Signs of Breaking Through in 62-50 Road Loss at Philadelphia

Philadelphia, Pa.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball team, looking to fill the win column for the first time this season, showed signs of getting closer to that achievement as the Lions (0-5, 0-2 CACC) suffered an eventual 62-50 setback at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) divisional rival, Philadelphia University.

In what has been GCU's bugaboo thus far in the young campaign, the Lions completed the first quarter with the advantage (18-17) for this first time in its first five contests. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams (3-2, 2-0 CACC) made the visitors pay in the second stanza by outscoring their guests, 25-9, to ease into intermission with a comfortable 42-27 surplus.

The two squads netted 14 apiece in the third frame with the Lions taking the final quarter from Philly, 9-6, but it would not be enough to pull out the road triumph.

GCU outshot the home team from the field, 36.4% (20-55) vs. 31.1% (23-74), but shot only 1-of-6 as a team from the charity stripe (16.7%). The Lady Rams drained 12 of 19 free throw attempts (63.2%).

Philadelphia sophomore, Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa.), topped all players with 19 points in 35 total minutes. Mary Newell (Sr.-Lansdale, Pa.) followed with 17 points in 32 minutes of action while senior Toni Arnao (Newtown, Pa.) dazzled with 17 rebounds, 13 points, five steals, four assists, and a pair of blocks.

Jess Placher and Jaelyn Tweedy paced the Lions with 14 points each, hitting on a combined seven three-pointers. Destiny Thompson snared a team-best eight boards.

The Lions break for Thanksgiving before heading to Lock Haven University Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
