Wilmington, Del.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad, coming off its first victory of the season this past Tuesday, was unable to string a second straight triumph together as the Lions suffered an 82-63 CACC divisional setback Saturday afternoon at Goldey-Beacom College.
GCU (1-9, 1-5 CACC) started the affair with an initial 5-0 lead, courtesy of an
Alliyah Berger lay-up and a
Jaelyn Tweedy three-pointer. The Lightning (2-9, 2-3 CACC) responded with a quick 6-1 spurt to tie the game at 8:09 in what would be the first of three stalemates in the first quarter.
GBC would take a 13-10 advantage after a
Mikila Stefanski (So.-Hammonton, N.J.) three-ball with 6:14, an advantage the home team would not relinquish for the remainder of the first half. After winning the first period by a 25-21 margin, the Lightning would increase its lead to as much as 14 points in the second quarter (39-25, 3:24). The Lions responded with a hurried 15-3 pouncing as the visitors entered intermission trailing by just a hoop at 42-40.
A
Jada Atchison jumper 4:34 into the third quarter concluded a 11-8 run to start the second half, providing the Lions their final lead of the contest at 51-50. The Lightning would end the frame with a 10-4 run to take a 60-55 advantage into the final 10:00 of play.
Goldey-Beacom would go on and dominate the period, outscoring GCU, 22-8, to ultimately coast to its second win of the year.
Britani Bryson (So.-Hampton, Va.) illuminated the Goldey-Beacom offense with her 19 points while owning the glass with 21 rebounds, including 14 of the offensive variety. Stefanski dropped in 18 points (all three-pointers) while
Lexi Bruno (So.-Millville, N.J.) joined Bryson with her own double-double consisting of 16 points and 11 assists.
Tanner Turner-Rush (Fr.-Harrisburg, Pa.) eclipsed double digits with 12 points to go along with five helpers and three steals.
Destiny Thompson came within a rebound of her second double-double on the year as the freshman topped all scorers with her 21 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the floor. Berger followed with 17 points while adding a team-high five assists and three steals. Tweedy added 11 points of her own, including a team-best trio of three-balls.
Georgian Court does not return to action again until Sunday, December 20 when the Lions host the University of New Haven in the Wellness Center at 1:00 p.m.
