Lions Head Into Holiday Break With Impressive 86-74 Home Win vs. New Haven

Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad secured its first-ever victory vs. a Northeast-10 Conference foe as a member of NCAA Division II Sunday afternoon as the Lions chased away the Chargers of New Haven University, 86-74.

The Lions head into a much-deserved holiday break with a 2-9 overall record while UNH sees its record even at 5-5. The 86 points scored by the home team was the most put on the board by GCU since an 86-65 win vs. Felician College back on January 27, 2007 in The Casino.

Georgian Court trailed New Haven, 22-21, after the first stanza before outscoring their opponent by a basket in the second (23-21) as the Lions sprinted into intermission with a slight 44-43 advantage. It would be the third session that would solidify the outcome as GCU pummeled the Chargers, 17-8, to take a commanding 61-51 lead into the final 10:00. UNH could not erase its deficit as the visitors succumbed to their host, 25-23, in the fourth-and-final frame.

Jaelyn Tweedy topped all scorers with 30 points (10-for-14), which included a glowing 6-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc and a 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe. The sophomore shooter became the Lions' first 30-point scorer since Tahira Matthews dropped in 32 at Pace University on February 4th of last season.

Alliyah Berger compiled her second double-double of the campaign with 25 points and 11 boards to go along with a team-best four assists. Jada Atchison added 15 points, eight rebounds, and three assists for the Lions.

New Haven's Alexandria Kerr (Fr.-Montclair, N.J.) authored a double-double in the defeat, sinking 18 points and snaring a game-high 14 rebounds (11 offensive). Briana Bradford (Sr.-Waterbury, Conn.) dropped in 13 points for the Chargers while Lauren Hebert (Sr.-North Reading, Mass.) and Quana Smith (So.-Bronx, N.Y.) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively, for UNH.

The Lions return to the hardwood on December 30 as GCU treks to Southern Connecticut State University for another non-conference contest.
