Waterbury, Conn.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad squandered a last-minute lead Saturday afternoon at Post University, leading to a frustrating 85-79 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road setback vs. the Eagles.
With Post (7-21, 7-12 CACC) owning a 32-26 advantage with 4:46 to go before intermission, GCU mounted a dominating 17-2 run to enter the half with an impressive 43-34 surplus. The Lions (2-23, 2-16 CACC) would increase the lead to as many as 15 points in the second stanza when
Kiara Colston dropped in a lay-up to make the score 62-47 at the 12:02 mark of the frame.
The Eagles proceeded to take flight and cut the deficit down to just one at 7:57 after a 16-2 spurt made the score 64-63 GCU. The Lions would direly hold the lead in their mitts until a lay-up by
Dericka Sims (So. Chesapeake, Va.) put Post ahead, 71-70, with just 1:52 remaining on the clock.Â
After a
Morgan Peacock lay-up put GCU ahead by three (79-76) with just 50 seconds to go, Post proceeded to slay the Lions' hopes with a 12-3 run over the final ticks to seal the home victory.
Deaisia Acklin (Jr.-Bronx, N.Y.) shined for Post with a double-double effort of 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Toni Deren (Fr.-Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Sims deposited 16 points each for the Eagles while
Nicole Viselli (Fr.-Groveland, Mass.) provided 12 of her own.
Peacock collected 17 points and 11 boards in collecting her third double-double of the season for the Lions. Colston led GCU with 20 points, the freshman's second straight contest with 20+ (22, 2/17 vs. Chestnut Hill).
Tahira Matthews netted 15 points in 21 minutes while
Jess Placher dropped in 11, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Georgian Court returns home for its final game of the 2014-15 campaign, a 6:00 p.m. contest vs. University of the Sciences Tuesday night. The Lions will recognize the collegiate careers of seniors Matthews and
Jameka Parsons prior to the contest.
