Lakewood, N.J.-- The Georgian Court University women's basketball team has been enjoying the good life on the home front as they picked up their fourth consecutive victory in the friendly confines of the GCU Athletic Wellness Center Tuesday night. The Lions dispatched the visiting Felician University Golden Falcons by the score of 74-67 en route to their fifth win (5-11, 3-6 CACC) of the season.
It has been said that it is not how you start but how you finish and the Lions embodied that mantra as the team struggled in the first half of the game. Felician jumped out to an early 15-10 lead after the first quarter and extended that lead to 37-26 at the half on 46% shooting from the field. Meanwhile, the Lions shot a woeful 24% in the first half of play. However, Georgian Court came out of the locker room with a renewed energy and began chipping away at the Golden Falcons' lead, outscoring their opponent, 22-19, in the third quarter. In the final frame, the Lions dominated by pouring in 26 points while only allowing 11 points on the defensive end of the court. GCU improved their shooting to the tune of 48% in the second half and shot a blistering 90% from the charity stripe for the game.
The Lions were led by a trio of players
Alliyah Berger,
Jada Atchison, and
Jaelyn Tweedy, who accounted for 58 of GCU's 74 points. Berger and Atchison each dropped in 20 points while Tweedy followed in lockstep with 18.
The Golden Falcons (1-15, 1-8 CACC) put four players into double digits, led by
Eliana Scanlon (Sr.-New York, N.Y.) and
Sierra McDuffie (Sr.-Paterson, N.J.), who each had 18 points. 15 points from
Hannah Johnson (Fr.-Jersey City, N.J.) and a double-double by
Treanda Foster (So.-Bronx, N.Y.) (14pts, 14 rebs) were not enough to carry Felician.
The four consecutive home wins by the Lions are the most since finishing the 2008-2009 season with five straight home victories. GCU will look to match that feat on Monday night as they host NYIT in the Wellness Center for a 6pm tipoff.
