Philadelphia, Pa.- Having defeated the University of the Sciences back on December 8 in the GCU Wellness Center, the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad entered the Bobby Morgan Arena Wednesday evening looking for a season sweep of its divisional foe.
Unfortunately for the Lions, the Devils owned the upper hand this particular evening as they put a fork in GCU's hopes by defeating the visitors, 71-54, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.
GCU, losers of four straight contests, slips to 5-15 (3-9 CACC) while USciences improves to 6-15 and 6-6 overall in conference play.
The Devils jumped out to an immediate 8-0 advantage and increased its lead to 17-4 with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter. Georgian Court proceeded to mount a substantial comeback, one that would give the Lions a 24-23 surplus halfway (5:08) through the second stanza. The advantage would prove to be just one of two for GCU in the ballgame, with the second (also of the one-point variety) coming with 2:51 remaining before intermission.
After coming out of the locker room ahead by the score of 29-27, the Devils almost equaled its first-half output by dropping in 27 in the third period to take a 56-45 lead into the fourth-and-final quarter of action. GCU would never get closer than 11 in the final stanza as USciences coasted, 15-9, to secure its second consecutive win.
Megan Wolf (Sr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the Devils and topped all players with her 18 points on the night.
Marissa Sylvester (Fr.-Trevose, Pa.) followed with 16 points, including 4-for-9 shooting from three-point territory.
Molly Greenberg (So.-Meadowbrook, Pa.) provided a balanced attack with eight points, six assists and four steals.
Jess Placher contributed a personal season-high with her 16 points, leading the Lions with a 4-for-8 effort from downtown.
Jada Atchison also collected 16 points while
Alliyah Berger added 13 points and four assists.
Destiny Thompson led all players with her 11 rebounds.
Georgian Court now returns home to host Post University Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
