Nyack, N.Y.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad did something Wednesday evening that it had not accomplished since February 16, 2013 ... win on the road! The Lions defeated host-Nyack College, 79-71, to snap a 34-game losing streak away from the friendly confines of the Wellness Center Arena.
The Lions, winners of four of their last six contests, improve to 4-10 (2-5 CACC) while the Warriors slip to 5-6 (3-3 CACC). The victory at Nyack is GCU's first at that locale since January 28, 2012.Â
Things got off to a solid start for the Lions as Georgian Court jumped out to an immediate 8-0 advantage. The Warriors stormed right back, however, and grabbed a 16-11 lead (courtesy of a 16-3 charge) with 1:55 remaining in the initial quarter.
Entering the second stanza with an 18-15 surplus, Nyack scored the first nine points of the frame to take a commanding 12-point lead. A
Jaelyn Tweedy jumper cut the deficit to five (33-28), but the Warriors rode an 11-7 sprint to close the half and enter intermission ahead, 44-35.
The Warriors came out of the locker room swinging as the home team collected a game-best,14-point lead (53-39) 3:32 into the third. The Lions erased all but two of that surplus, but Nyack stayed ahead, 62-57, heading into the fourth and final period.
Georgian Court saved its best for last as the Lions pummeled the Warriors in the last 10:00, 22-9, stealing the key conference victory and leaving the Nyack faithful stunned. A 10-0 attack to open the quarter provided GCU with a sudden 67-62 advantage with 3:18 left, which the visitors were able to milk for the remainder of the contest.
Alliyah Berger contributed a season-high 27 points for GCU, drilling 13 of 21 attempts from the floor in 38 total minutes.
Destiny Thompson registered her second consecutive double-double consisting of 12 points and 10 boards.
Jada Atchison added 15 points while Tweedy followed with 13.
Jamie McKeither (Sr.-Laurel, Md.) compiled a double-double of her own with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Raven Makins (Sr.-Laurel, Md.) came within one rebound (13 points, 9 boards) of her own double-double effort.Â
GCU looks to make it three straight W's this Saturday as the Lions travel to Dominican College for another CACC road showdown.
