Jada Atchison jumper with five seconds remaining, followed by a clutch block on the other end of the floor by
Ivana Kovacev, saved the day for the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad as the Lions held on to defeat Concordia College, 61-57, Saturday afternoon in the GCU Wellness Center.
The victory snaps a an eight-game slide for Georgian Court and gives the Lions (6-19, 4-13 CACC) their highest win total in a season since winning eight contests during the 2012-13 campaign.
Concordia, losers of five straight, drops to 4-20 overall (2-15 CACC).
GCU won an initial quarter (17-13) that experienced two stalemates and four lead changes. The Clippers, with a 17-10 performance in the subsequent stanza, sprinted into intermission with a slim 30-27 advantage.
The Lions regained the lead in the see-saw battle with a 16-11 showing in the third period, carrying a 43-41 surplus into the final ten minutes of action. The period was not for the faint of heart as the two squads exchanged eight leads and knotted the score on six other occasions.
A three-pointer from
Julianne Wilkinson (So.-Red Hook, N.Y.) with 1:53 left put the Clippers ahead, 57-55.
Alliyah Berger knotted the affair with a jumper with 41 ticks remaining, setting the stage for Atchison's clincher.
Berger topped all scorers with her 18 points, followed by 15 from teammate
Jaelyn Tweedy.
Jess Placher deposited 10 of her own in 24 minutes.
Jessica Rosalbo (Jr.-Staten Island, N.Y.) paced Concordia with 13 points while
Courtney Fleming (Fr.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Brianna Hendrick (So.- Valley Stream, N.Y.) added 10 apiece.
Hadiyah Black's (So.-Brooklyn, N.Y.) 11 rebounds served as a game-best.
Georgian Court remains home to host Philadelphia University Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m.
