Lakewood, N.J.- The 2015-16 season came to a close for the Georgian Court University women's basketball squad Tuesday evening as the Lions dropped a 67-61 decision to visiting Goldey-Beacom College in the GCU Wellness Center.
Prior to the contest, the Lions honored their two seniors,
Gabriella De Sisto and
Anna Ozolina, in what would mark the duo's final appearance in the royal and gold.
GCU hit the floor running by jumping out to a nifty 22-9 lead after the first quarter of action. The Lightning (9-19, 9-10 CACC) cut the deficit to eight points (32-24) heading into intermission after a 15-10 showing in the second stanza.
The Lightning continued to put the pressure on the home team by inching to within just three points (49-46) by winning the third period, 22-17. The pressure finally got to be too much for the Lions as Goldey-Beacom took its first lead of the night with 6:57 remaining in regulation, courtesy of a
Tanner Turner-Rush (Fr.-Harrisburg, Pa.) jumper.
After an
Alliyah Berger jumper tied the affair at 53-53 (6:30), a
Lexi Bruno (So.-Millville, N.J.)Â three-point play at 5:31 provided the Lightning a lead (56-53) they would not again relinquish.
Bruno and teammate
Marisa Howard (So.-Reminderville, Ohio) each enjoyed dazzling scoring lines with 28 and 20 points, respectively, for Goldey-Beacom.
Berger, playing all 40 minutes for the Lions, achieved team-highs with her 23 points and 14 boards, marking her team-leading sixth double-double and 10th outing with 20 or more points.
Georgian Court closes the year at 6-21 (4-15 CACC).
