Lakewood, N.J.- After defeating Bloomfield College for the first time ever on Saturday, the Georgian Court University men's soccer squad, heaping with confidence, dropped visiting Philadelphia University, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon to remain undefeated in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition.
The home-opening triumph evens GCU's record at 2-2, which includes a 2-0 mark vs. CACC foes, while the Rams still seek their first win on the season (0-3-1). Georgian Court now improves to 1-3 all-time vs. Philadelphia.
Saturday's hero,
William Docherty, picked up right where he left off as the senior scorched a penalty kick at 21:55 to provide the Lions with a 1-0 lead. That advantage would be short-lived as Philly's
Seiji Rose (Sr.-Toulouse, France) countered with a tally of his own, sinking a direct kick from atop the 18 at 23:10 to knot the score at 1-1.
That mark would hold until the 68th minute (67:45) when
Daniel Vicente one-timed a Docherty feed to secure his first collegiate goal ... and the all-important conference win.
Despite the setback, the Rams outshot the Lions, 8-7, and owned a 7-2 advantage when it came to corner kicks.
Yianni Kavarakas improved to 2-0 within the GCU net as the freshman corralled four saves in the effort.
The Lions go for three straight this Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. with a CACC contest at Felician University.
