Waterbury, Conn.- The Georgian Court University women's basketball squad braved the elements Saturday as the Lions trekked to Post University for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) snow day showdown. The journey proved to be extremely worthwhile for GCU as the club snapped a nine-game slide with a 73-63 victory over the host-Eagles.
The win represents the first conference triumph (2/13/16 vs. Concordia) and road win (1/6/16 at Nyack) for the Lions (3-11, 1-7 CACC) since last season. Post falls to (1-14, 1-6 CACC) after the setback.
After trailing the home team by one (18-17) after the initial quarter of action, GCU countered with an 11-2 run to start the second stanza. The Lions would outscore its foe, 19-9, in the frame as the visitors coasted into intermission with a 36-27 advantage. Georgian Court appeared to break the affair open with a comfy 17-point surplus (49-32) after a
Jada Atchison three-ball at the 4:20 mark of the third. However, an 11-0 Post push put the Eagles to within six points (49-43) late in the frame.
GCU's lead never dipped below double-digits in the fourth and final quarter and increased to a game-high 19 points after yet another Atchison three-pointer with 6:41 remaining on the clock.
"I am happy for our players to get a win, which has been so difficult to come by," said head coach
Jazz Perazic. "They do work hard and they work as a team, so it is nice to finally see a positive result. We must continue to get better. We must improve our rebounding and we must learn to value every possession by taking much better care of the ball."
Atchison paced the Lions with her game-high 19 points in the victory.
Alliyah Berger followed with a double-double showing of 12 points and 10 rebounds while
Jaelyn Tweedy and
Destiny Thompson added 10 points apiece.
Kaitlyn Borghesi contributed mightily with six steals and three helpers.
Taylor Ceballos (Fr.-Milford, Conn.) led the way for Post with a double-double effort consisting of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Tyra Jones (Sr.-Rochester, N.Y.) dropped in 15 points for the Eagles.
The Lions look to make it two in a row on Tuesday when Georgian Court hosts Nyack College at 6:00 p.m. in CACC play.
