Box Score Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's soccer squad registered its first triumph of the 2017 campaign Monday afternoon as the Lions edged visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College, 2-1, in NCAA Division II Labor Day action.

GCU (1-1) took an initial 1-0 advantage at the 13:31 mark of the first half when Dana Fontana collected an Anissia Fucci feed from midfield, before drawing out the STAC keeper and depositing an easy first goal of the season.

The Spartans (1-1) answered in the 69th minute (68:20) of play, courtesy of a Mekenzi Moreau (Fr.-Cornwall, N.Y.) blast to the upper left of the GCU net. Kelsey Ardizzone (So.-Bergenfield, N.J.) assisted on the tally, which marked the third of the year for Moreau.

The STAC surplus would last a measly 1:30 as the Lions roared back at 69:50 when a flying Fucci headed home a Meagan Murdocco corner kick to give the home team the lead and eventual victory.

Georgian Court dominated on the offensive end with a 21-5 shot advantage (14-3 SOG). Natalie Axelsson earned her first win in the GCU net, registering two saves over 90:00. STAC keeper, Courtney Dumain (Jr.-Monroe, N.Y.), left it all on the field for the Spartans, compiling 12 saves in the effort.

The Lions next play this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. with a home contest vs. always-tough Pace University.
