Clean Sweep for Georgian Court as Lions Stake Claim to ECC Men's & Women's Indoor Crowns

Staten Island, N.Y. - Georgian Court's men's and women's track teams made it a clean sweep at Saturday evening's East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, as both claimed conference titles.

Georgian Court's men's team won its second ECC Championship in three years, while the women's team earned its first-ever ECC indoor title.

"This was a fun and exciting meet to watch from start to finish," stated head coach Mike Murawski. "Before the meet, we talked about the idea of 'believing'. Believing that you can accomplish something that seems out of reach.  Believing in your teammates and believing in the hard work that everyone has put in since the beginning of the year.  We talked about the way you achieve this is by taking a leap of faith and burning your safety nets before you jump.  We naturally always hold back a little bit because of the fear of the unknown. This team let everything go today and put on a great performance."

Murawski added, "The coaching staff and each individual came together as a group to bring home the double win.  The women's side was a lot closer ,but we had a lot of athletes step up and have their best performances of the season when it mattered most.  The men's team took care of business from the moment the meet started – they did what we thought they were capable of doing and never looked back.  I am excited for this team's future as we have a lot of young athletes turning heads.  We couldn't be more proud of them."

The men's team was dominant, topping runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas by a margin of 194-113. The Lions especially excelled in the field portion of the meet, winning four of the six events and adding runner-up finishes in the two they did not win. Georgian Court also picked up three wins on the track.

The Lions' individual winners included Charles Wolef-Fields (60m - 6.92), Chukwuebizie Anuamadi (800m - 1:56.70), Evan Boyce (pole vault - 3.80m), Devin Martin (triple jump - meet record 14.11m), William Goldsborough (shot put - 15.87m), and Troy Bass (weight throw - 14.96m). The men's distance medley relay team of Nolan Czech, Jake Thoms, Nicholas Claudeo, and Jarod Brzyski were also victorious in a time of 10:45.11.

Seven team records were tied or fell on the men's side. Martin broke his own program-best in the 60m Hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds in the preliminaries, topping his old mark of 8.37 (12/7/18, Wagner Shootout). Martin also crumbled the Lions' top distance in the Triple Jump, set by teammate Jeshurun Devero back on 12/1/18 at the DeSchriver Invite.

Dylan Breen tied his team-high in the Long Jump with a second-place leap of 6.98m. On the track,  Wolef-Fields rewrote his time in the GCU annals with his time of 21.94 seconds in the 200m Dash, eclipsing the old mark of 22.25 (1/11/19, STAC Invite). Anuamadi did the same in the 800m Run, knocking off the previous team record he set (1:56.81) just a week ago in the Fastrack Invite.

Liam Solano makes his first appearance in the team record book as the freshman contributed a fourth-place time of 2:36.67 in 1,000m Run, erasing the previous GCU high of 2:36.80 (Elmeshad, 12/1/18, TCNJ Winter Opener). The Lions' quartet of Ian Knapp, Jake Thoms, Martin and DeShawn Lamar-Baldwin achieved a new team record in the 4x400 Relay after placing second overall with a time of 3:22.84. The previous best was 3:24.74, accomplished on 1/18/19 at the Youngstown Invite.

On the women's side, the winner of the meet was still in doubt heading into the final event, with Georgian Court leading Roberts Wesleyan by just three points. The Lions topped the Redhawks by less than one second to hold on and claim their first-ever ECC Indoor Championship by a final score of 111-106.

GCU won just four events on the evening but compiled lots of points with seven top-three finishes. The wins for Georgian Court came from Aretha Edwards (200m - 25.52), Aniyah Russell (long jump - 5.58m), Lyric Green (triple jump - 11.55m), and Stephanie Bock (shot put - 12.10m).

Edwards' time in the 200m Dash bests her team-record of 25.95, which see initially established last week in the Fastrack Invite.
