Lions Struggle on the Road in West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Nov. 28, 2022) - In their final tuneup before conference play, Georgian Court men's basketball took on West Chester University. The Lions never led and suffered an 86-59 loss at the hands of the Golden Rams. The loss puts the Lions below .500 heading into conference play at 2-3.

How it Happened
• West Chester led in most offensive categories. They outshot the Lions shooting better than 50% for the game while GCU shot just 35.5%. From three, WCU shot 41% (9-22) and GCU was 6-26 for 23%, making five of the six in the second half.
• Georgian Court lost the ball a season-high 18 times and West Chester scored 22 points off turnovers and 30 in transition.
• Under the basket, West Chester outrebounded the Lions 48-34 and scored 40 of their 86 points in the paint.
• Both teams got off to slow starts. GCU was 0-5 and West Chester 1-6 with four turnover in the first three minutes.
• The Golden Rams quickly turned it on though. West Chester scored the first five points in the game and never trailed. Justin Soranno got the Lions on the board with a layup at the 16 minute mark, but the Golden Rams answered right away as Kyle McGee splashed a triple.
• West Chester extended their lead to 11, 17-6, but the Lions mounted a comeback. They went on a 10-2 run to get within three, 19-16 midway through the half. Shane Williams buried a three and Soranno got three the hard way. Andrew Tummings, Jr. with a steal and outlet to Cameron Edmonds who finished cutting the WCU lead to three.
• But that 10-2 Lion run was answered by a 12-0 Golden Ram run. They went from up three to up 15, 31-16, in less than three minutes. Clint Wright, Jr. ended the run with a floater.
• The Golden Rams scored the final seven points in the half and took a 48-24 lead into the break.
• GCU shot just 32.3% overall in the half while the Golden Rams connected at a 57.6% clip. The Lions were 1-9 from three and WCU hit five-of-10. After 20 minutes, WCU held a big advantage under the boards. They outrebounded the Lions 24-14 and scored 22 points in the paint.
• The second half wasn't much different from the first. WCU scored the first five points and quickly pushed their lead to 30, 59-28.
• The Lions closed the game on a 15-4 run, but were never able to cut deeply into the Golden Ram lead and threat a comeback. They did perform better in the second half shooting 39% and scoring 35 points, 11 more than the first half.
 
It Was Over When...
• After West Chester closed the first half on a 7-0 run, they started the second by scoring the first five. That squashed any hope for a Lion comeback.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Clint Wright, Jr. scored 16 points to lead the Lions.
• Shane Williams added 10 points going 4-7 and 2-4 from three. He also grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
• Justin Soranno scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds.
• Titus Beard chipped in seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

For the Golden Rams
• Kyle McGee paced WCU with 16 points on 7-10 shooting.
• Robert Smith and Moro Osumanu each added 14.
• Eli Barrett helped out with eight points and seven rebounds.  

News and Notes
• Clint Wright, Jr. knocked in two three-pointers and is now tied for second all-time at GCU with 103 made triples.
• Andrew Tummings, Jr. got in his first action of the season.
• After turning it over 10 times or less in their last two games, GCU lost the ball 18 times against West Chester.
• This is the first game that has been decided by more than 10 points this season. The largest margin of victory in any GCU game this season was seven points.
• The 59 points GCU scored is a season-low as they failed to reach 60 points for the first time all season.

Up Next
• The Lions will begin conference play Wednesday, November 30 as they host Holy Family. They'll play in game two of a doubleheader following the Lion and HFU women who start at 6 p.m.
