LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Nov. 30, 2022) - The final day of November belonged to
Clint Wright, Jr. and the Lions. Wright, Jr. led his team to a 61-58 win over Holy Family in their CACC opener and set the new Georgian Court all-time three-point mark in the process.
How it Happened
• It was a thrilling game that came down to the wire and both teams were evenly matched. The Lions held the edge shooting 36.6% to the Tigers 34.9% and were better from behind the arc going 7-22 while HFU was just 5-24. The Lions also performed better at the foul line where they were 10-17. Holy Family left a lot of points at the line going just 9-20.
• Georgian Court also held an edge rebounding the ball. They grabbed 50 to the Tigers 39.
• Holy Family forced Georgian Court into 19 turnovers and scored 18 points off those turnovers. Holy Family lost the ball just 14 times themselves.
• Lion Coach
Terrence Stewart did a good job of navigating early foul trouble. Six Lions committed three or more fouls, three committed four or more and one fouled out.Â
• Holy Family raced out to an early lead, 12-5 and got it all the way to 10, 25-15, at the 3:49 mark thanks to an 11-1 run. But the Lions chipped back at the lead. Still trailing by seven with under a minute left in the half, Georgian Court got an offensive rebound and score from
Shane Williams, then a steal and a three-pointer from Wright, Jr. to go into the break trailing by just two, 28-26.
• Williams kept his hot shooting up to start the second half. He buried a jumper and a three out of the gates giving the Lions a 31-28 lead less than a minute into the period.Â
• The teams traded baskets and the game remained within one possession all the way until the 6:29 mark when
Jamaal Waters gathered an offensive rebound and a putback giving the Lions a 51-46 lead.
• At the 14:26 is when Wright, Jr. hit his record-breaking three-pointer. His fifth of the game and he wasn't finished. That gave the Lions a 40-38 lead at the time.
• After the Waters putback, the Lions went cold and didn't score for 2:36. That allowed the Tigers to get back to within one. But there was
Shane Williams again to end the spell and give the Lions another three-point edge with a tough turnaround jumper.Â
•
Hassan Jackson brought the lead back to six going 1-2 at the foul line with just 1:27 left to play. That lead shrunk to four in the final 60 seconds and a Lion turnover and transition bucket cut the lead to just two, 58-56.Â
•
Cameron Edmonds made it a three-point lead sinking one at the foul line with just 14 seconds to play. The ensuing possession saw the Tigers miss a game-tying three but they managed to grab the offensive rebound and put in a layup to make it just a one-point game.
• Wright, Jr. calmly sunk two at the foul line with under five seconds left. Holy Family though had one final shot but a desperation three was off the mark and the Lions held on for the win.
It Was Over When...
• This was a full 40 minute game and once the Tigers desperation three innocently fell to the ground and the final buzzer went off, that's when GCU could feel good about the win.
