Michael-Mason-Hiring

Men's Basketball

Stewart Tabs Michael Mason as Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept 21, 2022) – Georgian Court University is proud to announce the hiring of Michael Mason as Assistant Coach of the Men's Basketball program.

Head Coach Terrence Stewart selected Mason among a number of quality candidates. "We are very excited to bring aboard of a coach of Michael's quality," said Stewart. "He's someone who has succeeded at coaching athletes of all ages and abilities and knows how to get the most out of his players. He brings not only experience, but great credibility having coached top NCAA and professional basketball players in the NBA and overseas."

"I'd first like to thank Coach Stewart for the opportunity," said Mason. "He's given me the chance to live a dream. I can't wait to get started with the program and grow a culture of winning basketball. I love the challenge and am eager to get to work with Coach Stewart and the team he's assembled. I know that we have student-athletes here that can help us reach our goal of building a perennial winning program."

Mason was a standout player at the University of Charleston in West Virginia, playing from 1988-93. During his time there, Mason helped the Golden Eagles to multiple NAIA Conference and Regional Championships.

Upon graduation, Mason continued his playing days overseas. Mason then returned to the U.S. and put his Finance and Management degrees to work starting his own successful finance firm. The draw to basketball was still strong though, and in 2015, Mason returned to the hardwood, this time as a coach.

Mason joined on at Huntington Prep in West Virginia, one of the top-10 basketball programs in the nation from 2015-19. First working with the national and regional team, Mason quickly was elevated to help out on the post-graduate team. That post graduate team were two-time national champions and Prep South Conference Champions.

Following his time at Huntington Prep, Mason moved on to First Love Christian Academy from 2019-2021 as the head coach of the post graduate team. His most recent time was spent at the Patrick School since early 2022 as the head coach of the National Team.

Coach Mason is known for his work in the areas of skill development. He is most successful not only teaching the game, but preparing athletes for an even higher level of basketball. During his time on the bench, Coach Mason has sent more than 300 prep athletes to the NCAA level and coached more than 25 professional basketball players. At GCU, Coach Mason will have a hand in all the daily coaching aspects.
