Tigers Edge Lions in Low-Scoring Affair

PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 25, 2023) - Georgian Court was going for a season sweep of Holy Family, but it wasn't meant to be. Tied at 31 at the break, Holy Family scored the first six after intermission and led the rest of the way in a 63-57 win. Georgian Court has now dropped four in a row and fall to 9-10 on the season and 5-5 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Scoring runs were the theme of the night. There were multiple from each team in both halves. At the end of the night, Holy Family prevailed as the Lions final run expired when the clock hit zero.
• In a game that featured the two best three-point defenses in the CACC, shots from distance were not falling. GCU was 5-26 from three while Holy Family managed slightly better at 7-29.
• Georgian Court held the advantage rebounding the ball grabbing 49 to the Tigers 37. GCU also secured 22 offensive rebounds and used those to score 22 second-chance points.
• An action-packed first half was a series of runs for both squads. Holy Family stormed out of the gates with a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes, only to see that quickly evaporated.
• Georgian Court scored 12 straight over a 4:25 span. They took their first lead, 13-10, following a Christian Armstrong-Thomas three-point play.
• The Lions pushed the lead to as much as five, 15-10, before Holy Family got hot again. They went on a 14-4 stretch to take a five-point lead of their own, 24-19, with 5:56 to play in the half.
• Clint Wright, Jr. answered with a mid-ranger jumper and a three, and Armstrong-Thomas gave GCU the lead once again, 26-24 as GCU scored seven straight.
• The half remained within two points for the final 5:25. The Lions trailed 31-29 with less than 30 seconds to go when Jalen Bates pulled down an offensive rebound and found Jelani Jackson to tie the game at 31-all.
• In the closing seconds, it was Bates on the defensive end. His blocked shot kept the Tigers from taking the lead as the half ended in a 31-31 tie.
• The Lions again started the half off slow. They were 0-for-their-first-6 as Holy Family opened up a 37-31 lead.
• For the first five minutes of the half, there were six total points scored. Then the floodgates opened. In a 1:57 span, there were 16 points as the two teams went a combined 7-7 from the floor with two three-pointers.
• Both teams traded baskets for a while. With 8:39 to go, David Robinson, Jr. pulled down an offensive rebound and scored to give Holy Family their largest lead, 50-42, forcing a Georgian Court timeout.
• Holy Family continued to pull away, going on an 8-0 run while Georgian Court was scoreless for 6:26. With under five minutes left to play, the Tigers led by 12, 54-42.
• As they've done so many times this season, the Lions fought their way back. An 8-0 run capped by a Jalen Bates layup made it a four-point game, 56-52 with 2:16 left to play.
• GCU had a chance to make it a one possession game after holding the Tigers scoreless, but a Lion turnover led to a fastbreak layup, with a foul. Holy Family knocked in the and-one and with 1:39 left it was back to a seven-point lead, 59-52.
• The Lions never got it back to a one possession game. Holy Family went 4-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to put the game away.

It Was Over When...
• A fast break layup, and-one following a steal turned a four-point deficit into a seven-point deficit with just 1:39 to play. GCU never brought the lead down to one possession with Holy Family sinking 4-of-6 at the line in the final minute.
