Women's Basketball Starts 2023-24 Season With Two Games in Connecticut

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Nov. 9, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball kicks off 2023-24 this weekend against a pair of Northeast-10 opponents.

Previously vs. Southern Connecticut
• These two teams opened up the 2022-23 season a year ago in New Haven.
• The Owls got the better of that matchup with a 70-55 win.
• All-time GCU is 1-3 against Southern Connecticut. Their lone win came in 2021, 85-80 in Lakewood.
• Last season, the Lions were up one after 10 minutes, but were outscored by 16 the rest of the way.
• Erika Aspajo led the Lions scoring 19 points.
• In her first career game, Imani Gillette scored 10 with six rebounds.

Previously vs. St. Anselm
• This is just the second-ever meeting between the Lions and St. Anselm.
• The first came back in 2013, a 76-46 loss on the road. 
• The game was the first in the 2013-14 season. 
• Tahira Matthews picked up a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. 

Last Time Out
• The season ended last year in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament.
• GCU took on the top-seed in the North Post.
• Despite outscoring the Eagles by six in the second half, GCU fell 68-59.
• Jariah Patterson led the Lions with 18 points. 

Individual Milestones
• Erika Aspajo is two three-pointers away from 50.
• Paula Perez-Fabregas needs 21 points to reach 100.
• Leah Snisky is nine rebounds shy of 50. 

Scouting the Lions
• Georgian Court was picked to finish in fourth place in the CACC South Division according to the preseason coaches poll.
• Last year, the Lions finished 10-14 and 8-9 in the CACC earning the number four spot in the South Division to qualify for the postseason. 
• The Lions have a big freshman class with eight freshman and nine total newcomers among the 15 on the roster.
• There are five returners who saw minutes in 2022-23, Erika Aspajo, A'nyah Barker, Imani Gillette, Paula Perez-Fabregas and Leah Snisky.
• Aspajo, the second-leading scorer in 2022, was scoring nearly 15 points per game last year before an injury ended her season just eight games in. 
• Leah Snisky played the most games of any returner last season appearing in 19 with nine starts. 
• A'nyah Barker also had a shortened season playing just nine games. She shot 61% from the floor and dished out more than four assists per game.
• Imani Gillette led the team in rebounding with 8.5 and scored 7.8 points in 14 games.
• Paula Perez-Fabregas missed time early and didn't play in her first game until Dec. 29. She finished with 11 three-pointers. 

About Southern Connecticut
• Last season, Southern Connecticut finished 17-11 overall going 11-9 in conference play.
• They won their first round game in the NE10 Tournament but fell in the quarterfinals to No. 2 Assumption 60-44.
• In the NE10 preseason coaches poll, SCSU was picked to finish in fourth place in the 12-team league. 
• The Owls return three starters from last year. Katie Williamson played in all 28 games and made a team-leading 142 field goals. She also averaged a team-best 6.9 rebounds per contest.
• Ashley Evans started in 26 games averaging five points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
• Sophomore Delaney Haines shot 35% from behind the arc and was second on the team with 29 three-pointers.
• Last year SCSU scored right at 60 points per game and held opponents to 56. 

About St. Anselm
• The Hawks were picked to finish ninth in the NE10 following a 12-15 season in 2022-23 and 8-12 in NE10 play.
• Starting forwards Melanie Hoyt and Liv Robles return as two of the top scorers from last year. They each scored more than 11 points and Robles grabbed a team-best 7.7 rebounds per contest.
• Alex Quirolo led the Hawks shooting 42% from deep a year ago.
• St. Anselm boasts Division I transfers Tatum Forbes and Anna Nelson on this year's roster.
• The Hawks scored 62 points per game while allowing 61.4.
• They were a good three-point shooting team hitting 33.4% from behind the arc.
• Turnovers were a problem as the Hawks lost the ball 14.2 times per game.
