Women's Basketball Closes Semester With Two Games This Weekend

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Dec. 19, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball wraps up the first semester with two games in three days this weekend.

New Haven Chargers (8-1, 4-1 NE10)
Assumption Greyhounds (9-2, 3-1 NE10)

Previously vs. New Haven
• This will be the fourth consecutive season the Lions and Chargers have met.
• New Haven has won each of the previous three meetings, including a 74-45 win in Connecticut last season.
• Georgian Court's only win against New Haven came in their first meeting in the 2015-16 season, nine years to the date of tomorrow's game.
• Last season, Niyell McCargo led the Lions scoring a career-high 18 points and grabbing a career-best 12 rebounds. 

Previously vs. Assumption
• Just like New Haven, this will be the fourth consecutive season Georgian Court and Assumption will square off.
• The Lions all-time are 1-5 against the Greyhounds with a win coming in the 2021-22 season. 
• A year ago it was again McCargo leading the team with 13 points in a 73-47 loss.
Julia Whesper went 4-5 and scored nine points. 

Last Time Out
• A short-handed Georgian Court team went to New York to take on Division I Stony Brook.
• The Seawolves pulled away in the second quarter of a 67-29 win.
Maria Stanescu led GCU scoring eight points while Karissa Smedley totaled seven points and six rebounds. 

Individual Milestones
• Niyell McCargo needs one rebound to get to 150. 
Maria Stanescu needs another point to get to 75.
• Jessenia Edwards is two points away from 50.

CACC Leaders
• Maria Stanescu is in the top-10 for three-pointers made per game. Her 37.7% shooting from three is fifth in the league. 
• Tyra Lovelock's 2.3 assists per game are in the top-25. 
• Karissa Smedley and Niyell McCargo are in the top-20 in steals per game. 
Samantha Jones has cracked the top-25 in blocked shots and steals. 
• The Lions are averaging 19.5 bench points per game, third-most in the CACC.
• Georgian Court is shooting 27.5% from three, sixth-best in the league. 
• GCU is fifth in steals per game with 7.5. 

Who's Hot?
• Maria Stanescu has at least two three-pointers in three straight games. 
• Niyell McCargo matched a season-high 15 points in her last game played at Millersville. 
Karissa Smedley equaled a season-high six rebounds at Stony Brook and is averaging 8.5 points in her last two games. 

About New Haven
• New Haven is off to a terrific start in 2024-25 sitting at 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast-10.
• The Chargers only loss this year is to the Lions opponent on Sunday, Assumption.
• They've since won four straight, including a 68-66 win in overtime yesterday against Post. 
• New Haven is shooting the ball very well hitting at 44% overall and 36.4% from three.
• They're converting at the free throw line as well hitting 77.2%.
• The Chargers have shown a great propensity for rebounding the ball and are a +8 in the rebounding department.
• Three Chargers are scoring in double-figures led by Charlotte Bassett's 13.4. She's also the teams leading rebounding at 7.4 per game and is shooting 46% both overall and from three.
• Lindsay Hogan is shooting 45% and is scoring 12.3 points per game.

About Assumption
• Assumption is also having another great season at 9-2 and 3-1 in the NE10.
• One of the Greyhounds losses came against CACC foe, New Haven back in November.
• The Greyhounds defense is allowing just 55 points per game and opponents are shooting below 40% overall.
• Assumption is struggling from deep though, hitting just 27% of their threes while opponents are up at 31.5%
• The Greyhounds get a lot of scoring inside from the likes of Marina Callahan and her 12.4 points per game.
• Molly Stokes is leading the team scoring 16.2 points. She's hit the most three-pointers, 25, but is shooting just 28% from behind the arc.
• Kaijhe Hall is close to averaging a double-double. She has a team-best 9.1 rebounds per game while adding 8.7 points.
• Assumption is roughly even with opponents in the rebounding and turnover departments, holding a slight edge in each. 
• Of the Greyhounds 11 games this season, eight have been decided by six points or less and each of their last four have been decided by four points or less.
