Lions Tennis Scores First Victory of Year with Triumph over Chestnut Hill

LAKEWOOD, NJ- Home sweet home! After starting the season with two defeats on the road, the GCU tennis squad finally took the court in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center Wednesday afternoon and defeated CACC-rival, Chestnut Hill (0-3, 0-2), by a 5-4 tally for the Lions' first victory of the year (1-2, 1-0).

For the second consecutive day, freshman Sarah Lockenmeyer was victorious in singles action, defeating Chestnut Hill sophomore, Nicole Fernandes, 6-0, 6-3 in the #6 slot. Junior Natalie Grieci and senior Caitlyn Lawrence (pictured left) each earned their first singles victories of the campaign. Grieci dropped Kristen Wasson (Fr.) in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) in the #3 spot while Lawrence also posted a straight set triumph of her own, topping Karen Guwuriro (Sr.) (6-4, 6-2) in the #4 slot.

In doubles competition, the tandem of Lawrence and Alexus McClintic (So.) defeated Chestnut Hill's duo of Guwuriro and Wasson, 8-3. Lockenmeyer and freshman Victoria Gaffney joined forces to put away the Griffins' Sarah Doherty (Jr.) and Aiesha Grierson (Sr.), 8-3.

The Lions will next play at home this Saturday afternoon when they host CACC preseason #1, Concordia College, at 12 noon.
