Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's tennis team's fall slate came to end Tuesday afternoon and so did the collegiate careers of
Mafi Leal (Guaynabo, P.R.) and
Annmarie Wodell (Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) as the Lions honored both with a special Senior Day celebration prior to their match vs. Queens College.
The visiting Knights shutout GCU, 9-0, to improve to 7-0 on the year. GCU, after having won two straight, conclude the campaign at 3-10.
Queens opened the session by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Knight's #1 tandem of
Cami Abdallah (So.-Rabat, Morocco) and
Angelika Sobiecka (So.-Mlawa, Poland) defeated Georgian Court's Leal and
Meredith Hoffman (Spring Lake, N.J.), 8-1.
Jenna Plevako (Sr.-Astana, Kazakhstan) and
Andrea Samson (Jr.-Key Biscayne, Fla.) topped
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and Wodell, 8-0, in the second slot.
Molly Fanelli (Jr.-Bayside, N.Y.) and
Sumeera Kamil (So.-New Delhi, India) took down GCU's
Deanna Daluise (Sr.-Manalapan, N.J.) and
Tahira Matthews (Sr.-Bloomfield, N.J.) in the #3 match, by an 8-0 decision.
In #1 singles play,Plevako bested Leal by a score of 6-1, 6-0, followed by Kamil's defeat of Chandler (6-3, 6-3) at #2. Sobiecka dismissed Wodell in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) in the third spot, followed bySamson claiming victory over Hoffman (6-0, 6-0) in the #4 contest. Abdallah defeated Daluise (6-0, 6-0) to win at #5 before
Olivia Stauffer (So.-Huntington, N.Y.) shut out Matthews (6-0, 6-0) at #6 to end the match.
