Lakewood, N.J.- The Georgian Court University women's tennis squad collected its second consecutive victory Thursday afternoon as the Lions topped visiting Millersville University, 6-3, in the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
GCU improves to 3-9 while the Marauders go to 1-1 on the season.
The Lions began the contest winning two of three doubles competitions. The GCU tandem of
Meredith Hoffman (Sr.-Spring Lake, N.J.) and
Mafi Leal (Sr.-Guaynabo, P.R.) made quick work of Millersville's
Tori Davis (Jr.-York, Pa.) and
Kaylora Thompson (So.-Hughesville, Pa.), 8-1. The #2 pairing of
Kayanna Chandler (So.-Jackson, N.J.) and
Annmarie Wodell (Sr.-Pt. Pleasant, N.J.) won by the same 8-1 decision, defeating
Samantha Brzenk (Fr.-New Oxford, Pa.) and K
imberly Theophile (Fr.-Landisville, Pa.).
Millersville earned its lone doubles win in the #3 spot where
Heather Grove (So.-Elizabethtown, Pa.) and
Brandi Wolgemuth (Fr.-Elizabethtown, Pa.) topped
Deanna Daluise (Sr.-Manalapan, N.J.) and
Brittany McLaughlin (Jr.-Mt. Vernon, N.J.), 8-4.
Georgian Court proceeded to tack on four more triumphes in singles play to secure the 'W". Leal edges Davis, 6-4, 6-3 at #1, followed by Chandler's 6-2, 6-1 win vs. Thompson in the #2 slot. Wodell was victorious at #3 with a 6-1, 6-2 besting of Theophile. Hoffman proceeded to shutout
Maggie Karr (Sr.-Pottstown, Pa.) 6-0, 6-0.Â
The Marauaders earned two points in the #5 and #6 matches as Grove worked past McLaughlin (6-1, 7-5) and
Lauren Lefever (Sr.-Lancaster, Pa.) defeated Daluise 6-2, 6-2.
2014 comes to a close for the Lions Tuesday afternoon when they conclude the fall schedule with a 3:30 p.m. home amtch vs. Queens College.
