WEST HAVEN, CT - The Georgian Court University soccer team journeyed to the University of New Haven Thursday afternoon, falling to the Chargers, 5-1, at UNH's Kayo Field. The Lions fall to 1-3 with the defeat while the home team improved to 5-1 on the year.

New Haven opened the scoring on Thursday with a goal in the 20th minute by freshman Lucy Francisco on a pass from Nicole Grimaldi. The Chargers added one more score before halftime, in the 24th minute, off an Emily Buckley-Matura shot which made its way to the back of the net on a Francisco feed.

In the second stanza, Buckley-Matura scored her second of the game and seventh of the season off a pass from Carly Yamauchi. Marta Bertsos scored New Haven's fourth goal, her first of the season, at the 68:15 mark, giving UNH a 4-0 lead. Her score came off another assist from Francisco, her second of the game. The Chargers' final score came on Francisco's second goal of the contest and fourth of the season on a dish from Buckley-Matura.

The Lions' only score came in the 72nd minute when sophomore Kelly Lyons netted her fourth tally of the season on an assist from Farrell Pomponio to break the UNH shutout.

The Chargers held a 19-8 advantage in shots and held the Lions to two shots on goal. Each team tallied one corner kick, while UNH was called for 14 fouls, compared to nine for the Lions.

Georgian Court's Lindsay Hammond (1-3) permitted all five goals to the Chargers, while also turning away five shots, in 70 minutes of play. New Haven goalkeeper, Kim Taylor, recorded 72 minutes in net, recording her fifth win of the season with two saves, while yielding GCU's lone goal.

The Lions now set their sights to Saturday when they open the CACC portion of the schedule with a road contest at rival-Caldwell College, commencing at 12 noon.
