SHIPPENSBURG, PA- The Georgian Court University tennis team battled back from a 3-0 deficit and rallied to a thrilling 5-4 road victory over Shippensburg University (1-3), Thursday afternoon, for the Lions' second straight "W".
The match got off to an inauspicious start as GCU dropped all three of its doubles contests to Shippensburg, 8-5, 8-6, 8-5. Down 0-3, the Lions faced a major uphill battle going into singles competition.
GCU proved to be up to the task, as
Brittany Aimone (7-6, 6-2 (7-2),
Victoria Gaffney (6-4, 6-0),
Alexus McClintic (6-0, 6-2) and
Sarah Lockenmeyer (6-1, 6-2) secured singles triumphs.
The score was now tied at 4-4 as both squads waited on the completion of the match between GCU's
Natalie Grieci (pictured) and SU's Jess Lodek. Lodek grabbed the first set, 6-4. Grieci charged back in set two, taking it, 6-1. The Georgian Court junior was able to utilize that momentum in the tiebreaker, winning it, 7-5, while securing the personal victory, as well as the team's third win of the year.
GCU (3-4) looks to make it three in a row Saturday afternoon when they host Molloy College at 1PM. The match is a make-up from a rainout on August 29th.
