PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Georgian Court University tennis team suffered an agonizing defeat Wednesday afternoon, falling at CACC-rival Chestnut Hill College, 5-4. The match marked the Lions' fourth 5-4 loss of the season.
GCU fell behind early, dropping two of the three doubles matches.
Natalie Grieci and
Sarah Lockenmeyer downed
Regina Doherty (So.-Southampton, PA) and
Kristen Wasson (So.-Albrightsville, PA), 8-3, for the Lions' lone tandem victory.
In singles play, Georgian Court's
Victoria Gaffney (6-1, 6-1) and Grieci (6-2, 6-2) cruised to wins in #5 and #6 singles, respectively. In the triumph of the day for GCU,
Lindsay Hammond defeated
Danielle Knott (So.-Mt. Vernon, NY), 1-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Sofia Sarkissova provided a valiant effort for GCU in #2 singles, eventually falling to Chestnut Hill's
Kelly Dennis (Fr.-Cincinnati, OH), 6-3 6-7 (5-7), 10-7.
The Griffins improve to 8-5 (5-3 CACC) with the win while the Lions fall to 4-9 (2-5 CACC).
Georgian Court will host Post University Friday afternoon at 1PM in a make-up match from September 28th. It will also be Senior Day as the Lions will honor Grieci and Hammond prior to the contest at the Ellen Mullane Gallagher Tennis Center.
