Pitching Takes Centerstage in Lions' DH Sweep of Adelphi

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Georgian Court University softball squad, after consecutive twin-bill splits last week, swept its first doubleheader of the season Wednesday afternoon by defeating Adelphi University, 7-1 and 10-2.

Diana Sansevera (8-1) enjoyed her finest outing of the young campaign for GCU, allowing just one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out a season-high 14 batters in the opener.

Georgian Court (13-5) took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning after DP Brooke Hull led off the stanza with a single to right-center, advanced to second on a wild pitch from Adelphi starter and losing pitcher, Christine Robinson (Sr.-Oceanside, NY), proceeded to third on a Jen Tartaglia single to left-center and scored on a sacrifice fly from C Donnie Brossoie. The Lions added another tally in the third when Jess Comiskey scalded a lead-off double and scored on a single to right off the bat of 2B Rachel Ruch.

LF Chelsea Long (pictured) scorched her first career home run to left-center in the fourth inning, a two-run shot, giving her team a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers (6-6) plated a run in the top of the fifth when CF Rochelle Noren (Langely, British Columbia) slapped a two-out single to right, stole her second bag of the game, and scored on a double down the left field line by RF Katie Brophy (Sr.-Beaverton, OR).

The Lions answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from 3B Sammie Jo Garofalo and two of the unearned variety in the sixth to make the score 7-1.

GCU fell behind, 1-0, in the top of the first inning in the nightcap. However, the Lions' lineup refused to take a third straight Game Two beating and scored two in the home-half of the first and didn't look back.

Led by Ruch (2-for-2, 3 R, 4 RBI) and Garofalo (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI), the Lions went on to plate 10 runs on eight hits in the 10-2, five-inning conquest.

Lyndsey PeQueen (3-3), after lasting only 1/3 of an inning in her previous start, went the distance today, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks with a lone strikeout.
