LAKEWOOD, NJ- After 14 games, two days and almost 16 hours of softball, the 3rd annual Georgian Court University "Go to Bat for Breast Cancer" Tournament came to an end Sunday evening. The host-Lions took to the field four times over the weekend, battling three of the East Region's top-10 clubs.
MOLLOY 9 GCU 7 (10 innings)
GCU, the #3 squad in the region, faced #4 Molloy College (25-9) in their first game Saturday afternoon. After falling behind 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions stormed all the way back, courtesy of a
Chelsea Long (pictured) grand slam.
After another Georgian Court run in the fifth to give the Lions a 5-4 lead, courtesy of a RBI double from DP
Brooke Hull, Molloy quickly rebounded to make it 5-5 in the top of the sixth and eventually forcing extra innings.
After a scoreless seventh, the two clubs would each score a run in both the eighth and ninth frames. With the contest tied at 7-7, Molloy plated two runs on one hit in the 10th and final inning, securing the 9-7 win for the visitors.
Diana Sansevera fell to 14-3 in the gutsy, complete game effort (10.0 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 5 BB, 13 K).
NYIT 8 GCU 0 (5 innings)
After their 2:56, 10-inning marathon vs. Molloy, the Lions came out flat vs. #9 NYIT (16-15), falling to the Bears, 8-0, in five innings. Georgian Court could only muster two hits in the affair, courtesy of Hull and C
Donnie Brossoie.
Hull (5-2) suffered the defeat in the circle (6.0 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K).
GCU 11 Queens 8
Georgian Court opened its Sunday slate with an 11-8 triumph over Queens College (10-19). The Lions, upon entering the fifth inning with a 10-3 advantage, felt fairly confident of the impending victory.
The Knights would not exit quietly, however, as Queens would score five runs on four hits and two GCU gaffes in the top of the fifth, making it a two-run game. A
Kelsey Cutler RBI single in the sixth gave the Lions their 11th and final run.
Sansevera (15-3) started in the circle for Georgian Court, but left after two innings with a 5-0 lead. Hull came in to pitch the final five innings and picked up the save, yielding eight runs (2 ER) on 10 hits and two walks. She also struck out two.
Dowling 5 GCU 3
In one of the highly-anticipated match-ups of the tournament, GCU dropped a 5-3 decision to #5 Dowling College (23-9).
The Golden Lions snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the third with a two-run homer from
Stephanie Tarango (Fr.-Fontana, CA).
Hull would tie it up with a two-run blast of her own in the bottom of the fourth, the slugger's 6th of the year.
Dowling took the lead for good on a solo dinger from CF
Krystil Hofmann (So.-Glendale, NY) in the top of the fifth.
Sansevera (15-4) took the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out 10.
Georgian Court's record now stands at 23-10.
