LAKEWOOD, NJ- In conditions more conducive to a football game, the
Georgian Court University softball team attempted to make that a
reality as the Lions trounced the Golden Falcons of Felcian College,
21-7, in Game Two of a rain-soaked doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. GCU
completed a thrilling, come-from-behind, 4-3 victory in the opener.
The Georgian Court offense sputtered throughout most of Game One,
recording just one run on four hits through six frames.
Leading 3-1 with two outs in the seventh inning, P Kristina Jimenez and
her teammates looked to have a victory over the East Region's #3 team
locked up. However, back-to-back singles from RF Melissa DePalma and
LF Chelsea Long and a walk to CF Jess Comiskey set the table for
the improbable comeback. 2B Sammie Jo Garofalo, already 2-for-3 on
the day, casually laced a screaming double to the left-center gap,
plating all three runners and abruptly end the contest.
Diana Sansevera improved to 16-4, allowing two earned runs on seven
hits and three walks in the complete game. She also struck out six.
The Lions' suddenly potent bats carried into the nightcap as the home
team lead 7-4 after one inning and 10-7 after two before putting the
contest well out of reach with a nine-spot in the third frame.
C Donnie Brossoie (pictured) provided a majority of the run support
as the GCU backstop went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI,
including her first home run of the year, which gave her club a 20-7
advantage.
Long immediately followed Brossoie's blast with a clout of her own,
her third of the year, for Georgian Court's final tally of the day.
Brooke Hull (6-2), the reigning CACC Player of the Week, earned the
win in the circle while significantly helping her cause at the dish
with a 3-for-3 effort, including a homer, three runs scored and 3 RBI.
Garofalo finished the day going 5-for-7 with two runs scored and 6 RBI.
Comiskey came around to score five times over the two contests.
The Lions improve to 26-10 (12-2 CACC) while the Golden Falcons drop to
9-22 (3-13 CACC).
