GCU Split Double Dip with Philly U.

LAKEWOOD, NJ- After a lost Saturday at Dominican College (0-2), the Georgian Court University softball team eagerly anticipated a return to their home diamond on Monday vs. Philadelphia University. The Lions salvaged Game Two, 6-2, ending a season-long three-game losing streak, extended by a 3-2, eight-inning defeat to the Lady Rams in the opener.

Philadelphia initially led, 2-0, on a first-inning, two-run home run from Rams' catcher, Katie Renner (So.-Berryville, VA). The Lions finally crossed the plate in the home fourth when DH Brooke Hull provided her team-leading 8th long ball, one of the solo variety.

Philly ace Ali Schmidt (So.-Cordova, MD) and her teammates looked to have the game won when 2B Rachel Ruch (pictured) lofted a harmless pop fly to Rams' SS, Kacie DeMaio (Fr.-Highland, NY). Inexplicably, the ball squirted from DeMaio's glove. Ruch, in the sudden chaos, scurried to second base on the play. Hull then strolled to the plate and immediately smacked a ribbie single to center field, tying the score at 2-2.

In the top of the eighth, 2B Maggie Desmond (Sr.-Bayport, NY) ripped a one-out double to left, graciously giving DeMaio a shot for redemption. And redeem she did, knocking a single up the middle, allowing Desmond to come in with the winning tally.

Schmidt earned the victory, allowing seven hits, three walks and an earned run, while striking out seven.

Diana Sansevera (16-7) was saddled with the defeat, yielding nine hits and three walks. She also K'd seven.

Georgian Court (28-14, 14-6 CACC) took a first inning lead of its own in Game Two as Ruch cranked a two-run dinger to right-center, her 6th.

The Lions added two more runs in the  second and one in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Hull, the offensive hero of the opener, pitched a dandy of a game in the night cap, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk to improve to 8-3 in the circle.

Nicole Singel (Fr.-Exton, PA) took the loss for Philly, which fell to 18-14 (10-6 CACC).
