Lions Muster Only One Hit in 8-0 Loss at New Haven in NCAA DII Regional Opener

WEST HAVEN, CT- The Georgian Court University softball team collected just one hit and four base runners overall as the #8-seed Lions fell to top seed and host, University of New Haven, 8-0 (six innings) in Game One of the 2010 NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament Friday afternoon.

Northeast 10 Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year, Breanne Gleason (Sr.-Bristol, CT) improved to 34-5 on the year after having her way with the GCU lineup, yielding just a one-out single to Sammie Jo Garofalo  in the top of the fourth inning after retiring the first 10 batters of the contest.  Gleason went the distance (6 IP), allowing also a walk and a hit-by-pitch to go along with seven strikeouts.

The Chargers (39-6) put the game out of reach almost immediately, scoring three runs in both the first and second innings for a speedy 6-0 advantage. After a single run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 7-0, DH Meghan Walter (Sr.-Bay Shore, NY) laced a, game-ending, two-out single to right field in the bottom of the six, plating SS Christina Gelardi (Fr.-Derby, CT), who led off the frame with a double to right-center before advancing to third on a wild pitch from GCU's Diana Sansevera (25-10).

Walter finished the afternoon with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBI. LF Chelsea Harold (Jr.-Oxford, CT) (2-for-4, two runs), 2B Courtney Garland (Jr.-East Meadow, NY) (2-for-3) and Gelardi (2-for-2, three runs) collected multi-hit games for UNH.

Sansevera went the full 5.2 innings for Georgian Court (38-18), permitting six earned runs on 11 hits, four walks and two wild pitches.

GCU looks to avoid elimination on Saturday afternoon when they play CACC foe and #5 seed, Caldwell College. The Cougars fell to #5 Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0 (8), in Friday's nightcap. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 PM.

The Lions eliminated Caldwell from the CACC Championship Tournament, 7-6, last Saturday and are 2-1 vs. the Cougars this season.
