Lions Stay Alive in NCAA Regionals with Clutch 2-1 Victory over Caldwell College

WEST HAVEN, CT- What a difference a day makes! The Georgian Court University softball squad, a day after losing meekly to the University of New Haven, 8-0, bounced back in a big way Saturday afternoon by avoiding elimination with a clutch 2-1 victory over CACC-foe  and#5 seed, Caldwell College. The Lions (39-18) will now take on the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University at 4PM in another elimination game.

GCU, acting as the visting team, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning as CF Jess Comiskey (pictured) laced a lead-off double to left-center field before scoring on a single to centerfield by 2B Rachel Ruch.

The Lions maintained that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Cougars tied the score on a Patti Garofalo (Jr.-Collegeville, PA) double to left, scoring pinch runner Rebecca Ashley (So.-Bellingham, MA) from second base.  Ashley ran for 1B Kyrie Timbrook (Sr.-Los Gatos, CA), who had led off the inning with a single.

Georgian Court took the lead for good in the top of the sixth as Comiskey, who was 2-for-3 and scored both GCU runs, smashed a ringing one-out triple off the left field fence. SS Sammie Jo Garofalo procceded to line a single to left, bringing home Comiskey.

Diana Sansevera (26-10) earned the complete game victory, allowing just the lone run on six hits and a walk. She also struck out seven. Sansevera showed her true mettle in the bottom of the fifth when she pitched out of a jam consisting of runners on second and third with no outs.

Kourtney Wilson (Fr.-Islip, NY) suffered the defeat, allowing one earned run on five hits and zero walks while going the distance. She struck out three GCU batters.

The Lions have now eliminated Caldwell (42-16) from a postseason tournament for the second straight week. GCU sent the Cougars packing last Saturday in the CACC tournament.

This will be GCU's second look at Southern Connecticut this season after splitting a doubleheader with the Owls in Lakewood, NJ on March 20th.
