Lions Triumphant in Outdoor Season Opener vs. St. Peter's

LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University track and field team opened its 2011 outdoor campaign on Friday with a dual meet against Division I and defending MAAC Conference Champion, St. Peter's College. Led by dominating double victories from captains Alyssa Hudgins and Justine Elardo, the Lions defended its home turf by dfeating the Peahens, 91-85.5.

Hudgins won by over five feet in the shot put and led a Lions' sweep of the event with her throw of 38'9" while following that with a career-best of 123'5" in the discus throw as the Lions also swept that event.

Elardo won by more than two seconds in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.58 into a very strong headwind before doubling back with a fine 1:06.92 win in the 400m hurdles.  She also posted a strong 61.4 opening leg on the Lions runner-up 4x400 relay squad.

Fellow sophomores Mary Sancilio (High Jump), Justine Berger (3,000m), Erin Frye (800m) and Amy Berry (Javelin) also notched victories on the day.

"Our sophomores did a great job leading the team; Erin (Frye) really shined in the 800m.  She ran a very smart race in windy conditions and outkicked a tough field to get the first collegiate win of her career.  It was a very fine performance and we are excited to see how the season plays out for her," said Head Coach Brett Harvey.

The Lions also established several school records on the day, which included the freshman trio of Susan Lora (100m, 13.21), Jasimen Little (200m, 26.89) and Ciera Phillips (Triple Jump, 33'5.5").  Lora and Little teamed with sophomores Lauren Calorel and Latifa Kelly to break the 4x100 school record with a fine 50.69 time.

"Overall, for our first meet ,we were very pleased with the team's performance," said Harvey.  Despite the great weather, we battled the wind all day and it certainly affected the times in a number of events.  What was great today was how well we competed in a head-to-head environment against a very good Division I opponent.  This meet will really help us as we head into our championship season and a lot of close contests."

"While Indoors, we lost a very close conference meet, so winning a close one today definitely will help our confidence in closing out close meets in the future," Harvey added.

The Lions return to action this Friday and Saturday at the Monmouth University Invitational.
