Softball Comes Up Empty Again on Day Three of NTC Games

Sammie Jo Garofalo
CLERMONT, FL-The Georgian Court University softball squad's fun in the Florida sun has been at a minimum as the Lions, for a third straight day, finished the evening at the NTC Spring Games without a victory, as GCU dropped an 8-4 decision to Gannon University (PA) and fell to St. Anselm College (NH) for the second time in three days, this time by an 8-5 count.

GAME ONE

Gannon University and Georgian Court traded zeros until the bottom of the third inning when the Golden Knights plated three runs, followed by five more in the home half of the fourth for an 8-0 advantage.

The Lions got on the board in the top of the fifth on a ribbie single from SS Sammie Jo Garofalo and three more in the seventh, courtesy of  RBI doubles from CF Jess Comiskey and Garofalo and a ribbie base hit from DP/P #Brooke Hull#.

GCU outslugged Gannon, 10 hits to four, but its pitching distributed eight free passes.

Garofalo was the hitting star for Georgian Court in this contest with a 3-for-4 effort at the dish while Comiskey (2B, R, RBI) and LF Selina Santillo (2 2B, 2 R) collected two knocks apiece.

Shannon Dukes fell to 0-2 on the young season while Gannon's Erica Bartholow (So.-Connellsville, PA) earned the complete game victory.

GAME TWO

In a rematch from Sunday, the Hawks of St. Anselm took a speedy 3-0 lead in the first inning before the Lions charged all the way back to take a lead of 4-3 in the top of the third inning, courtesy of a two-run single from 2B Rachel Ruch and ribbie knocks from Garofalo and 3B Kelsey Cutler

GCU immediately gave up two runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 5-4 deficit, which would hold until a Cutler laser beam masticated through a swirling wind and cleared the left field fence to tie the ballgame at 5-all. The dinger was the first long ball for the Georgian Court offense in 2011.

Unfortunately, that was all the Lions could muster the rest of the way as St. Anselm tallied two scores in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth to secure the 8-5 win.

Brooke Hull fell to 0-4 in the circle for the Lions while St. Anselm's Kelly DeSormier (So.-Tiverton, RI) went the distance for the victory.

Georgian Court takes Wednesday off before returning to action Thursday with an 11:30 AM tilt vs. Queens College (NY) and a rematch from Tuesday with Lake Superior State University (MI) at 1:30 PM.
