LAKEWOOD, NJ- The Georgian Court University softball squad, in a rematch of the 2009 NCAA Division II Super Regionals, exacted revenge against Le Moyne College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the Dolphins 6-2, 3-2.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Syracuse , NY, but poor field conditions on the Le Moyne campus caused the change of venues.
A two-run first inning and a four-run third frame was all the scoring the Lions needed to cruise to a 6-2 victory in the opener. A
Brooke Hull double to right-center scored CF
Jess Comiskey (who led off the game with a walk before advancing on a
Sammie Jo Garofalo sacrifice bunt) from second base to start the scoring. 3B
Kelsey Cutler brought in Hull with a ribbie single to left, giving GCU a 2-0 advantage,
SS
Selina Santillo highlighted the four-run third with a three-run long ball to right field, her second of the season. This followed another ribbie knock for Hull, this time a screaming single to right that scored Garofalo who led off the frame with a single.
Diana Sansevera (2-0), in her first start of the season after rehabbing a thumb injury, looked like the dominating pitcher of old, yielding two runs on six hits, while striking out six, in the complete-game effort. The 2009 Daktronics East Region Pitcher of the Year did not walk a batter in the contest.
Le Moyne's starting pitcher,
Brenna Klein (Jr.-Huntington Beach, CA), fell to 0-2, yielding two runs (1 ER) on two hits and a walk, while striking out one in just two-thirds of an inning.
Shannon Dukes (1-5) earned the gold star in the finale as the right-hander hurled her best game as Lion and earned her first victory with GCU (7-13), allowing two runs on just three hits and three walks in her seven innings.
All of the game's scoring occured in the third inning with the Dolphins (2-10) taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run double to right off the bat of Le Moyne catcher
Morgan Edmondson (Jr.-Johnson City, NY).
The Georgian Court offense charged right back in the bottom half of the frame as a two-run shot to left by Garofalo tied the contest and another RBI single to right from Hull brought home the decisive third tally.
For Garofalo, it was her first long ball of the season and first since going deep in a 5-3 victory over the University of New Haven on 5/10/09. That victory earned the Lions the Division II East 2 region crown, advancing GCU to the Super Regionals vs. Le Moyne.
Sarah Harrison (Fr.-Cobleskill, NY) suffered the loss in the circle for the Dolphins, falling to 2-4 on the season.
GCU does not have much time to celebrate as they travel to New Haven on Sunday for a pair at Southern Connecticut State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
